  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: Serves approximately 12 buns 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over top and let sit until bubbly (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix flour and salt. Create a well in the center; add yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Combine until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled.
  4. Cook sausage in a skillet until browned; drain excess fat and cool.
  5. Punch down risen dough and divide into 12 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball; fill with sausage and cheese before sealing.
  6. Shape each bun into flowers by pinching at the top for petals; place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Let buns rise again for about 30 minutes; preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Brush tops with egg wash; sprinkle seeds if desired. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden.
