  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: Serves approximately 12–16 slices 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 24 ounces white rolled fondant
  • 4 ounces black rolled fondant
  • Black royal icing ingredients (powdered sugar, meringue powder, water, black gel food coloring)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cream butter until fluffy; beat in eggs one at a time and add vanilla. Alternate adding dry ingredients with milk until combined. Divide batter between pans.
  3. Bake for 30-35 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  4. Beat butter for frosting until creamy; gradually mix in powdered sugar, then add cream and vanilla until fluffy.
  5. Level cooled cakes and stack with buttercream in between layers. Apply a crumb coat and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
  6. Roll out white fondant and cover the cake smoothly; trim excess.
  7. Prepare black royal icing by mixing powdered sugar and meringue powder; add water to reach piping consistency and tint black.
  8. Pipe spiderweb design on top of the cake using royal icing.
  9. Shape the spider from black fondant and place it atop the web.
